Question for you...

Ok, so if there are any expert people with Celiac out there, maybe you can give me a hand. I was told that oats are part of my no-no list (with the exception of certain foreign oats, etc). Recently, someone who's had Celiac for a while sent me a recipe for oatmeal chocolate chip cookies, and told me they think Capn Crunch is gluten-free. I was ecstatic, but after looking at the label saw that oat flour is the second ingredient.

Any insights on oats? What's the rule?

  1. Oops. Please don't take your friend's advice re: Cap'n Crunch. Oats are not recommended when you first are diagnosed as the body needs time to heal and some people react badly to the protein in oats, which is similar to gluten (but not identical to it). When you've healed, say six months to a year after diagnosis, then you can try gluten-free CERTIFIED oats preferably under doctor supervision. Regular oats that would be used in mainstream products are HIGHLY contaminated with wheat due to processing and you should never eat something made with regular oats or oat flour. So, Capn crunch is out. If you want to try those oatmeal cookies, try Bob's Red Mill GF certified oats or another brand that offers specialty GF oats.

If you want a mainstream cereal, Chex has recently got a GF Rice Chex, Corn Chex, and more that are labeled GF and produced on dedicated equipment that I recommend.

    Good luck!
